Fitzgerald, Lasee move toward Senate runs

Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and state Sen. Frank Lasee have moved closer to possible bids for the U.S. Senate.

Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, and Lasee, R-DePere, both filed paperwork with the FEC over the weekend allowing them to begin raising money for possible bids for the GOP nomination.

Fitzgerald spokesman John Jagler said Fitzgerald mailed the paperwork for the FEC over the weekend. Lasee said in a release he filed yesterday.

Jagler said Fitzgerald plans to make an official announcement about his candidacy next week.

Businessman Mark Neumann is the only declared candidate in the Republican field so far. And Tommy Thompson also is officially fundraising.

Tammy Baldwin is the only declared Democrat.
